 - From 1926-1949, there was only one state tournament.
 - From 1950-1978, the state was divided into two classes based on town size. Following an eight-team, double-elimination state tournament in each class, the two class champions would play in a best-of-three series to decide the state champion.
 - From 1979-1989, the format was changed again. An eight-team Class B state tournament would be held, in which the final two teams would advance to play with six Class A teams in the State Championship Tournament.
 - From 1990-1993, every class A team was automatically entered in the State Championship Tournament, along with the two finalists from Class B.
 - Since 1994, the current format has been in place, in which the top two finishers from each of three Class A regional tournaments, the host team, and the Class B champion qualify for a eight-team double-elimination championship tournament.
 - Beginning in 2002, the Class B champion was given the option of either playing in the State Championship Tournament, or representing the state in the Division II American Legion Central Plains Regional. Whichever tournament the champion chooses to play in, the runner up then plays in the other.
